+तीसरी शताब्दी में, [[Special:MyLanguage/Origen of Alexandria|अलेक्जेंड्रिया में रहनेवाले ओरिजिन ]] ने प्राणियों के पदक्रम के बारे में अपने विचार प्रस्तुत किये, जिसमें स्वर्गदूतों से लेकर मनुष्य, राक्षस और जानवर सभी शामिल थे। प्रारंभिक चर्च के इस प्रसिद्ध विद्वान और धर्मशास्त्री ने आत्मा के सिद्धांत की मुख्य आधारशिला रखी थी। इन्होनें हमें सिखाया कि वर्तमान-काल में जीवात्माओं को उनके पिछले जन्मों के कार्यों और योग्यताओं के आधार पर परखा जाता है तथा इसी आधार पर उन्हें नए कार्य सौपें जाते हैं। इस तरह प्रत्येक व्यक्ति के पास पदक्रम में ऊपर उठने का मौका होता है।ओरिजिन के कार्यों पर ही पर बाद के धर्मगुरुओं, डॉक्टरों और धर्मशास्त्रियों ने अपनी परंपराओं का निर्माण किया।
